Breathing during swimming is one of the most important skills that provides a solid foundation to a swimmer. Breathing is an inhaling and exhaling process, or an exchange of air in the lungs. Beginners are taught inhaling from the mouth and exhaling from the mouth. This is easy to impart to kids who are young or adults who are new to swimming. Ideally, breathing during swimming is to inhale from the mouth and exhale from the nose or both nose and mouth. The exhalation from the nose prevents water from flowing into the nasal cavity, which may cause discomfort in […]

When can your child be in water? Your child can be in the water as soon as he or she is born, as they would have been “swimming” in their mothers’ wombs for the past 9 months! Why swim schools only allow infants to begin swimming lessons at 4 or 6 months? Firstly, businesses do not wish to take unnecessary risks. Infants may not exhibit any health issues outwardly initially. By 6 months, most children would have completed most of the required vaccinations. Infants are also more developed by this point in time, being able to sit up and even […]

Many parents often ask: when can my child go swimming on his or her own? For a start, let’s take a macro view of the entire calendar year. There are 52 weeks in a year, about 4 weeks in a month. We assume that a child takes one lesson per week. Out of these 4 weeks, there may be days with bad weather, going on holidays, children falling sick, other matters to attend and so on. With all of that removed, we may end up with 2 lessons a month, or 24 lessons in a year. Realistically speaking, no one […]

Some parents ask about the use of flotation aids to encourage their children to swim independently. Many times we see these items on sale, and it seems an easy way out to let children enjoy swimming on their own. But do they actually inhibit the learning process? Well, the answer is both yes and no. Overuse of flotation aids may give a false sense of security to children. Without the aids, children may feel insecure, and hence have no confidence in swimming on their own. For example, putting on goggles is not a foremost requisite to learn to swim. You […]

On 1 May 2018, MoovSwim organised a complimentary workshop to share knowledge, experience and tips for parents, caregivers and teachers. It was a fun-filled day packed with session after session, and it was delightful to see how both kids and adults enjoyed learning swimming together! The parents and caregivers learnt various techniques and methods that they could adopt in teaching children how to swim on their own. Teachers were interacting with each other, sharing ideas and pedagogies that they had found useful in making swimming lessons meaningful and enjoyable. Coach Yong demonstrated his methodology and techniques in teaching children of […]

Baby swimming is one sensory activity that promotes a healthy lifestyle, cultivates a life skill and promotes parent-child bonding. In recent times, many people are captivated by the idea of how babies can rescue themselves by “drown-proofing” methods – they float on their backs spontaneously when they fall into the water. These methods promote the idea that drowning risks are decreased when babies and toddlers are taught to rescue themselves in this manner. We have been receiving many enquiries on whether we teach such skills to babies. However, MoovSwim does not advocate in the teaching of these methods. The UK […]

The Importance of Swimming Lessons Whenever I talk to parents, I was told that swimming lessons is one of the most important skills they are willing to invest in. It is widely accepted that learning to swim can save lives. However, every year there will be one or two drowning incidents happening in Singapore. From 2011 to 2015, there have been an average of twenty drowning or near-drowning cases in Singapore. The latest drowning incident in May 2017 happened to a 13 year old boy off East Coast Park. Drowning still remains as one of the top causes of deaths […]

Why Children Need Consistent Swimming Practice Swimming lessons are usually conducted once a week. However, some children are not able to come for class due to other commitments. This results in limited progress in learning, and sometimes regression. Malcolm Gladwell, author of many best-sellers such as The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make A Big Difference, and Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, mentioned that in order to become an expert in anything, one needs to put in an average of 10,000 hours of practice. That would mean attending weekly swimming lessons is just the bare minimum requirement! Many […]

In today’s Straits Times, there is an article highlighting the rise of drowning incidents in children aged under 6 years old. From 2011 to 2015, there were 104 such cases and 10 deaths, or an average of about 20 near-drowning cases each year. In comparison, the hospital saw between five and 12 such cases a year during the previous five-year period. “The scary thing about drowning is that it’s very silent and can happen in seconds,” said Dr Arif Tyebally, deputy head of KK Hospital’s emergency medicine department. Adults need to be vigilant whenever their children are near water. It […]
